For Immediate Release
June 9, 2017
June 27 is National HIV Testing Day (NHTD), a day to get the facts, get tested, and get involved! The 2017 federal theme is "Test Your Way. Do It Today". Nearly 45,000 people find out they have HIV every year, and currently there are about 1.2 million people in the US living with HIV.1 What is more alarming is one in eight people do not know they have it.
HIV is spread from one person to another by:
- Having anal, vaginal, or oral sex without a condom, with a person who has HIV. HIV can be passed through blood, vaginal fluid, and semen.
- Sharing needles, syringes, or other injection equipment with a person who has HIV.
- Through pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding from women who have HIV.
Testing is the first step to finding out if you have HIV. If you have HIV, getting medical care and taking medicines regularly helps you to have a healthier life and also lowers the chances of passing HIV on to others.
The HIV/AIDS Prevention Committee of Region 7 (Butler, Darke, Miami, Montgomery, Preble and Warren Counties) is urging everyone to get tested!
