Public Heath - Dayton & Montgomery County is set to kick-off Minority Health Month with a series of events aimed at reducing health disparities and improving health outcomes among minorities in Montgomery County.
“Social conditions such as poverty, housing, education, and community development shape people’s choices and behaviors, and contribute to disease and mortality,” says Cheryl Scroggins, Community Coordinator for Health Equity at Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County. “Our community is working to understand how we can collectively address the social conditions that create poor health and shorten lives.”
Minority Health Month is a 30-day health and wellness campaign that was instituted by the Ohio Commission on Minority Health, and is celebrated nationally. Throughout the month there will be special events and programs designed to improve people’s health.
The five goals of Minority Health Month are to:
- Provide crucial information to allow individuals to practice disease prevention.
- Promote healthy lifestyles.
- Showcase healthcare providers and resources.
- Highlight the unequal health of Ohio’s minorities compared to non-minorities.
- Increase ongoing community support to improve minority health.
The following two events are presented by Public Health’s Office of Minority Health:
2019 Minority Health Month Kick-Off!
Saturday, April 6, 2019, 9:30 am - 1:30 pm, Neon Movies, 130 E Fifth St, Dayton
Event will feature a screening of the movie Hidden Figures,
free breakfast, free health screenings, a $10 gift card, and more. Free and open to the public.
Heritage of Health Festival
Saturday, April 20, 2018, Noon - 5:00 pm, Dakota Center, 33 Barnett St., Dayton
A community health festival with three health presentations, free health screenings, health information tables,
and a $10 gift card! Lunch will be provided. Swahili, French and Arabic language interpreters will be present. Free and open to the public.
