International Bike to School Day
Public Heath – Dayton & Montgomery County will be demonstrating a “Complete Streets” project as part of Dayton Public School’s Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 10, starting at 7:00 am at Ruskin Elementary School, 407 Ambrose Court, Dayton.
“Complete Streets” make it easier to cross the street, walk to shops, and bicycle to work. They are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities.
“A Complete Street may include sidewalks, bike lanes, bus lanes and median islands,” said Haley Riegel, Communities Presenting Chronic Disease Manager, Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County.
In alignment with Dayton Public School’s Bike to School Day activities, Public Health will have a temporary protected bike lane on display, which uses greenery as a separation between the bike lane and traffic.
During Bike to School Day, students and families can use and experience a short-term protected bike lane. There will also be a pop-up smoothie shop and all children who walk to school, as well as parents who join their children will be eligible for prizes and giveaways.
The “Complete Streets” project is an initiative of Public Health’s Creating Healthy Lifestyles Program and is funded in part by the Ohio Department of Health.
