To Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall
DAYTON, Ohio, June 26, 2019 – Marking the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn riots that gave rise to the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, a local group is gathering personal stories, photos, newspaper articles and other memorabilia to acknowledge and preserve pivotal history of the local greater Dayton LGBTQ+ history.
The project is a collaborative effort of various area LGBTQ community activists and organizations. The goal is to collect information about pivotal people, places and events that helped shape and change the community for the better with regard to LGBTQ equality, and then professionally archive it for future generations to study. This year’s inaugural effort will culminate in a recognition event to recognize outstanding people, places and events during October, which is LGBTQ History Month, with a goal of continuing the effort each year.
“When we think about the health of any community, such things as safety in public places, safe affordable housing, protection from discrimination and access to quality culturally competent health care services are vitally important. These are the things that many in our LGBTQ community have fought hard for over the years and we want to be sure that journey is acknowledged, celebrated and preserved,” Mallicoat said.
Participating organizations include the Greater Dayton LGBT Center, Rainbow Elder Care of Greater Dayton, the City of Dayton, Montgomery County, Dayton Metro Library, and Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County.
