National HIV Testing Day

Nearly 40% of new HIV infections are transmitted by people who do not know they have the virus.1

National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) June 27, is a day to encourage people to get tested for HIV, know their status, and get linked to care and treatment. The theme this year is "Doing It My Way", which encourages people to make testing a part of their lives and on their terms, be it in a clinic, at home or with a friend or loved one. It also reminds people to talk to others about testing and why it’s important to them.

As of 2017, there were 1,497 people living with HIV in Montgomery County. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care. The CDC further states those with specific risk factors, should test at least once a year. Gay and bisexual men have the largest number of new diagnoses in the United States. Blacks/African Americans and Hispanics/Latinos are disproportionately affected by HIV compared to other racial and ethnic groups. Also, transgender women who have sex with men are among the groups at highest risk for HIV infection, and injection drug users remain at significant risk for getting HIV. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for proper care.

The HIV/AIDS Prevention Committee of Region 9 (Clark, Darke, Greene, Miami, Montgomery and Preble counties) Offers case management, linkage to care, HIV testing, counseling and referral services.

The committee is teaming up with the Greater Than AIDS Campaign to offer free HIV testing in the following Walgreens stores from 10:00 am -7:00 pm on June 27:
