“Screens” Provide Increased Access and Availability for Problem Gamblers

Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County’s Addiction Services program invites you to join them for their 2nd Annual Problem Gambling Prevention Symposium, “The Intersection of Problem Gambling and Other Risky Behaviors” on Friday, October 27, from 8:00 am to 4:45 pm at Sinclair Community College - Building 12.??
The symposium will feature an exchange of ideas and information on topics such as: defining problem gambling and responsible gambling; current trends in the field of gambling; problem gambling prevention efforts in Ohio; and the relationship between problem gambling and other risky behaviors.
The keynote speaker is Cheryl Mahoney, a Licensed Social Worker and Certified Substance Abuse Professional with over thirty years of experience. She has extensively studied process addictions and the health effects of “Screens” (internet-enabled devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers). Mahoney will discuss how these devices can potentially cause harm. Excessive screen use has been found to negatively impact our physical, mental and emotional health. Screens also provide increased access and availability for online gambling, along with other potentially dangerous content such as alcohol, tobacco and drug ads, violent content, and pornography.
Judson Workman, Problem Gambling Prevention Project Manager for Public Health explains, “Nearly all adults and most teenagers use smartphones as a primary means of communication and social connection. Cell phones and tablets provide instant access to internet gambling sites which is a major issue for those struggling with problem gambling. This creates unique challenges for prevention and treatment professionals.”
The symposium will feature three afternoon breakout sessions. Session topics include: Fantasy Sports, Skins & E-Sports; The Brain, Gambling & Addictions; Creating a Successful Gambling Awareness Program; Risky Business and Stacked Deck: Engaging the High School Population; and a faith-based panel discussion.
The event is free to attend and provides free parking, lunch and the ability to earn CEUs for counselors, social workers and chemical dependency and prevention professionals.
