Public Health Receives Bicycle Friendly Businesssm Award

Today, the League of American Bicyclists recognized Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County with a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Business (BFBsm) award, joining nearly 1,200 visionary businesses from across the country.
With the announcement of 72 new and renewing BFBs today, Public Health joins a cutting-edge group of 1,232 local businesses, government agencies, and Fortune 500 companies in 49 states and Washington, D.C., that are transforming the American workplace.
“The business community’s investment in bicycling is playing a central role in making the country a safer, happier, and more sustainable place to live and work,” said Amelia Neptune, League Bicycle Friendly Business Program Manager. “We applaud this new round of businesses, including Public Health, for leading the charge in creating a bicycle-friendly America for everyone.”
“Public Health encourages bicycling as an easy option for transportation,” said Health Commissioner, Jeff Cooper, Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County. “When our employees bike, great things happen including: decreased carbon footprint, reduced health care costs, connection to our community, and a fun and healthy work culture.”
Moving forward, Public Health will have access to a variety of tools and technical assistance from the League to become even more bicycle-friendly. Some of Public Health’s current activities include:
- Supporting a bicycle rack initiative through Link Dayton Bike Share as a creative way to get more guests and employees on bicycles
- Providing technical and financial assistance for bicycle-related community partners, such as Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) and Bike Miami Valley.
- Identifying worksites interested in active commuting policies, providing resources and technical assistance to worksites on active commuting, and assisting in the implementation of active commuting policies throughout the city and county.
In partnership with the MVRPC, providing Complete Streets Workshops to municipalities and townships in the county; part of this training includes encouraging infrastructure and policy changes which aim to accommodate bicycle commuters.
