Each year Public Health’s mosquito surveillance program provides the following services in Montgomery County:

  • Educates the public about how they can protect themselves from mosquito bites

West Nile virus is the most common virus spread by mosquitoes in the continental United States. People can also get sick from less common viruses spread by mosquitoes, like Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya.

In rare cases, these viruses can cause severe disease or even death. Most people infected with these viruses do not have symptoms, or have only mild symptoms like fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting.

In 2018 450 mosquito pools were trapped with 71 identified as having mosquitos that tested positive for West Nile virus.
